Kimilili MP Didmus Wekesa Barasa risks losing his seat over a bankruptcy suit after failing to pay Sh4.2 million.
The Jubilee MP has been taken to Court by Smart Cars Limited who accuse him of failing a car loan for his Toyota Landcruiser purchased in 2017.
Documents filed in court show that the car dealer had earlier filed a suit at the Magistrate’s court last year seeking to compel Barasa to settle the debt to which the first time legislator agreed to make monthly payments.
He however has not settled the debt and the firm wants him declared bankrupt.
“The said Hon Didmus Wekesa Barasa is unable or has no reasonable prospect of paying the debt and a bankruptcy order is merited as prayed herein,” court documents read.
According to the documents, Parliament was to pay sh7 million and Barasa would then cover the remaining sh4.7 million to cover the total cost of the carat sh11.7 million.
Barasa then deposited sh1 million and undertook to settle the outstanding Sh3.7 million by October 11, 2017, a commitment he never fulfilled.l
Barasa is yet to file his response and the case to be heard on March 26.
