Once in a while. a long long while God blesses us with a gift to help solve our so many problems, especially those that are man-made.
The late Professor George Saitoti once said that there comes a time when the nation is bigger than an individual, and it seems that phrase has come to play in our time.
Many know him as former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, but the young man who hails from, Mathioya, Muranga county is the champion who is fighting to save tea farmers from the hands of their predators across the region.
Nyakera has made it his personal business to ensure that the deep rooted corruption in the tea sector is pruned to its death.
He left the Ministry of Transport and later Planning in 2018 after his contract, among others, wasn’t renewed without any explanations given to the public.
His push has slowly but successfully gained momentum leading to recent reaction by President Uhuru Kenyatta who called for immediate reforms in the KTDA to ensure that farmers earn more from their sweat.
The 38 year old banker and financial expert believes that if all his proposals and others in the tea bill are made law, farmers will reap more as there will be an overhaul of KTDA Management team and an audit of funds will help recover stolen or lost money if any as well as pave way for the benefit of the farmer.
Politically, Nyakera is the current Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) Chairman as well as DP party leader.
He is warming up to the idea of succeeding Mwangi wa Iria as Muranga County Governor.
