A system glitch at Kenya’s largest telecommunications company Safaricom on Friday morning may have resulted to a massive loss to the multi-million Mobile network company.
This is after Kenyans rushed to purchase expensive “Safaricom platinum” data bundles for free using ‘pay with Bonga’.
The platinum data service which was introduced early this year includes a monthly data bundle which comes with data bundles, call minutes and unlimited sms.
For as low as just one bonga point, a customer only needed to dial *544#, assess the platinum option and buy the Sh10,000 package which offers 100 international call minutes, 1,500 minutes and 40gb of data.
Later on at around 9 am Safaricom got wind of the news from social media and quickly withdrew the “pay with bonga” for the platinum offers.
It’s not clear how safaricom will react to this as there is no official communication ye, but some members of KOT, as expected, using the hash tag #Safaricom had their say.
“Methinks #safaricom can do nothing about the bundles. Unless they show you conspired to fraud them. You were an innocent purcahser of data who inadvertently pressed 10k and safaricom rewarded you. If they set off from Mpesa or airtime or bonga, sue them!” says Ambrose Waigwa @WAIGWAMKUU
